Check the butter bin in your fridge or the crock on your countertop: More than 1,700 pounds of a popular butter brand have been recalled across seven states. And the reason for the recall is a little hard to swallow.

On March 26, Vermont-based Agri-Mark, Inc. initiated a voluntary recall of eight-ounce packages of Cabot Creamery Extra Creamy Premium Butter, Sea Salted, due to concerns that the butter may be “contaminated with elevated levels of coliform,” according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Coliform is a bacteria found in human and animal feces, as well as in soil and on plants.

The recalled butter was packaged as two four-ounce sticks in cardboard shells, with the UPC “0 78354 62038 0.” The packages feature a “best by” date of 09/09/25, the lot number “090925-055” and “Item #: 2038.”

The butter was distributed to Vermont, New York, Pennsylvania, Maine, Connecticut, New Hampshire and Arkansas, the FDA says.

On April 8, the FDA classified the recall as a Class III, which is defined as a “situation in which use of, or exposure to, a violative product is not likely to cause adverse health consequences.” The agency lists the recall as “ongoing.”

In a statement posted on the Cabot Creamery website, Agri-Mark says it has received “no reported complaints or illnesses” related to the recalled butter and that it was able to recover 99.5-percent of the affected lot of butter before it was sold. However, the company says, “a small amount —17 retail packages (8.5 lbs.) — was sold to consumers in Vermont.”

The company says it has identified and addressed the source of the issue, and that none of its other products were affected.

“There have been a variety of news reports that are incomplete and have dramatically misrepresented this recall with respect to the risk it posed to consumers,” the company says.

Nevertheless, if you find the recalled butter in your fridge, you should probably throw it out or return it to wherever you bought it.

Consumers with concerns are directed to contact the Cabot Creamery via email (info@cabotcreamery.com) or phone (1-888-792-2268/Monday – Friday, 9:30 AM – 5:00 PM EST).
