TikToker’s Empty Chicken Nuggets Go Viral

It is reasonable to expect, when you buy chicken nuggets, that there will be some chicken inside them. What you probably don’t expect is to find is a breaded coating surrounding — kind of eerily — nothing but air.
But nothing but air is exactly what TikToker Amanda Reed (@reedtimessix) says she found when she cut into a batch of nuggets she’d purchased from Walmart.
“Excuse me, Walmart. Where is the chicken in my Great Value Chicken Nuggs?” Reed wondered on a video that has gone viral on TikTok. “Signed, Overstimmied and Underfed.”
In the video, which has been viewed more than 4.4 million times since it was posted on February 20, two hands (presumably Reed’s) are shown calmly slicing three woefully empty nuggets into neat halves on a wooden cutting board. A plastic container of previously halved and equally empty nuggets sits just next to the board. The sound of slicing — crunch, thump, pause to peruse the vacant middle — is almost ASMR-level mesmerizing.
“These are gonna need a lot of sauce @Walmart,” Reed captioned her post.
Some commenters made jokes. “You got the wrong pack. Those are chickenless nuggets,” quipped one. “vegan?” said another. “Chicken sold separately,” cracked a third.
Others had questions. “How did they bread it? Like what was breaded what’s the surface that made this perfectly shaped nugget? I don’t understand,” one wondered.
Many saw an opportunity for creativity.
“Though these are a defect! I would buy these and fill them with something like spinach artichoke dip or pepperoni and cheese and make little nugget pockets!” suggested one such commenter.
And a few commenters said something similar had happened to them.
“you don't understand the level of excitement I had when I see this video this happened to me three times before and I’ve never thought I would see anyone else complain about the same thing,” wrote one.
“thats been happening to us too! we airfry our walmart nuggets and its more like chicken ghost nuggets,” another shared.
Walmart has acknowledged that the customers’ nugget complaints, at least, are not empty. “We recently learned that some of our Great Value Chicken Nuggets have not met our quality standards and are working closely with our suppliers to resolve it,” a store representative told TODAY. “We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused.”
Reed, for her part, seems surprised that her experience touched such a nerve: “What’s crazy is I wasn’t even angry about it, just more so amused and wanted to see whether other people had it happen,” she wrote in the comments alongside her original TikTok post, “but ppl are going Wild on these comments.”
The nuggets may be empty, but the comment box is full.
